June 2006

Dear Classmates of 1961

Greetings to each of you, the members of the “best class” ever to enroll at Concordia College. Although It’s hard to believe, we are about to celebrate the 45th year of our graduation. Remember you are only as old as you feel, so enjoy every day to the fullest.

One good way to enjoy yourself is to attend our 45th class reunion October 13-15. This year there are several new variations to the usual Homecoming schedule. The weekend will kickoff with the traditional Thursday night bonfire followed by Friday’s Homecoming Banquet and Harvest Ball. On Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. we will come together for the Class of 1961 reunion breakfast. ***Please note on the inside flap of the Cobber X-tra that all reunion breakfasts are to take place Saturday morning, not Friday morning. In the evening the traditional Homecoming show is being replaced with the usual Sunday afternoon band, choir and orchestra concert. All of this sets the stage for our class gathering beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Fargo Country Club. The plan is for another informal event similar to the experience held there for our 40th reunion, lots of talk and sharing of old times and current events. I will be sending you details about the Country Club gathering later this summer. In addition I will post the information on our class website. The web address is www.Herbmn.com; click on the Concordia 1961 folder to access the information. Plus I have a new Prexy Joe Chapel Talk posted on the web for your reading pleasure. One more thing, if you need to reserve hotel rooms there is a large listing of area hotels at http://www.cord.edu/dept/admissions/hotels.php. Make your plans now to attend our reunion, it promises to be a memorable event.

As long as we are discussing class business I will update you on our results for the annual class giving challenge. This year we attained a 34.2% participation rate and generated $37,563 for the annual giving fund. A big thank you to all who participated. We did not, however, achieve our usual first place finish for the decade award; we lost out to a strong competitor, the class of 1960 gets the honor at 41.1% and $231,734. Nonetheless, because this is an anniversary year for our class, the 45th reunion gift solicitation will continue to April 2007, so we have plenty of opportunity to make our goal of becoming a funding partner for the Carl Lee Counseling Center. In regard to giving I want to share with you a quote from a recent letter from Concordia president Dr. Pamela Jolicoeur. She stated, “Founding a college is not a once and done thing. Concordia is a living organism that needs to be tended and nurtured in order to survive. In a sense, a college needs to be founded over and over again.” Now is a good time to reflect upon the role Concordia has played in your life and to think about how you can help pass on this legacy to the next generation of students. Include a gift to Concordia in your plans for this year in recognition of 45 years for the “best class” ever to enroll at Concordia College.

In addition to financial support another excellent way to support the college is to recommend prospective students. If you are aware of any high school scholars that would be a good fit at Concordia you can contact an admissions counselor at http://www.ConcordiaCollege.edu/refer.

Class Notes:

Mary (Jacobson) Haugen, Moorhead, Minnesota, spent 2003-05 in the Peace Corps teaching English in Ukraine.

Rev. Peter Boe, is serving as Interim Pastor at a 2-church parish – St. Paul (rural Merrill, IA) and St. John (Merrill, IA).

As you can see we are pretty sparse with our class notes. Take a minute and let us know what’s happening in your life. Class notes can be submitted on line at http://www.cord.edu/dept/alumni/classnotes.php. You can also update your contact information and view information from other classes as well. Take a look at the website you’ll find lots of interesting information.

One last comment: we lost several great legendary Concordia personalities this past year. I have profiled below several I think you would be most familiar with.

David Hetland, died Easter Sunday April 16 at 58. Hetland directed Concordia’s communications office from 1974 to 1982, and then was on-call as director of Special Projects, a job that handled the Christmas concert murals and other college artwork. David designed the Christmas concert murals for 28 years.

Walther Prausnitz, 80, died Saturday, September 17, 2005. Dr. Prausnitz taught English and humanities at Concordia from 1952 to 1970 and then served as director of Liberal Arts Studies from 1970 to 1999.

Elinor Torstveit, died Thursday, February 2, 2006 at home. She was 86. Mrs. Torstveit was a biology professor for 36 years at Concordia, and famous for the many snakes and other reptiles she housed in the science center.

We have much to be thankful for in the gifts of these great teachers.

One more reminder: the 45th reunion for the class of 1961 will be October 13-15, 2006. I have reserved the Fargo Country Club for a Saturday evening gathering. Be sure and save the date. Thank you again for keeping the Cobber spirit alive and well and for your gifts to the college.

Sincerely,

Herb Morgenthaler
