Observatory

Observatory (38)

Used by both the community and Concordia students, this facility houses an 18-inch Newtonian telescope, a 12 1/2-inch classical Cassegrain, and four 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain scopes. Advanced astronomy students have the opportunity to learn astronomy photographic techniques by adapting cameras to these telescopes. The 25-foot by 30-foot building features a motorized retractable roof. Concrete piers that are independent of the building's floor system and extend below the frost line hold the two larger telescopes, which must be absolutely still when in use.

The 1991 construction of the facility was funded by a Kresge Foundation grant and other gifts to the college.
