2012 Inquiry Seminars

Stress, Distress and Happiness

Susan Cordes-Green

This course will consider the effects of the many types of stressors that affect our lives. Sometimes stressors can be helpful, increase motivation, and lead to greater life satisfaction and happiness. Students will also examine ways that stressors can contribute to the distress of physical and psychological illnesses. In particular, this course will focus on the effects of traumatic stressors, such as natural disasters, wars and child abuse.

Readings will include biographical and fictional works influenced by stressful events. Discussions and written work will critically examine controversial social, legal and psychological issues related to traumatic stress experiences. The course will also provide opportunities for students to explore methods of coping with the many stressors that may be encountered as part of student life. OC
