An introduction to the methods and goals of archaeology and some of the present controversies and problems confronting the discipline.Topics to be discussed will include looting and destruction of sites, in particular those in Iraq, the question of who owns the past with emphasis on the fight for the bones of Kennewick Man and the possession of the Elgin Marbles, and the problem of pseudoarchaeology with special emphasis on theories of Atlantis and ancient astronauts.
