The Concordia College department of art serves the artistic needs and interests of both those students who have elected an art major or minor and those of the general student population. We maintain a program that enhances our students’ capacity to develop full, satisfying and responsible lives by equipping them with the tools of aesthetic appreciation and visual expression. All programs offered encourage a visually sophisticated and historically informed awareness of the contemporary world, as well as the self- confidence to respond to that world with finesse, passion and technical expertise.

The art department provides learning experiences that prepare students to achieve the following outcomes:


•  Students will gain a basic understanding of art history from ancient cultures to modernity, with in-depth knowledge in at least one specialized area of art history.
•  Students will have a range of studio experience, learning to use a wide variety of tools, materials, technical skills, creative approaches, and knowledge in traditional and contemporary/experimental methodologies.
•  Students will learn in a liberal arts context that will enable them to relate art to other academic disciplines, to their communities, and to life on and off campus.
•  Students will develop individual creative expression and sensibility that are truly a part of them and their unique experiences.

The art department offers two majors, leading to the Bachelor of Arts degrees in art and art education, and a minor in art. The art major is designed to serve as a foundation for careers in studio work and related fields such as graphic design, art therapy, recreational or community art, museum studies and industrial art. The art major offers a choice of two programs, the general program and the preprofessional program. The general program includes two tracks, an 8.0 course credit Art Studio track and an 8.5 course credit Art History track. The preprofessional program includes three tracks, a 12.0 course credit Art Studio Concentration, a 12.0 course credit Art History Concentration and a 12.0 course credit Graphic Design Concentration. The teaching major in art serves as preparation for careers in K-12 education. For some of these careers and for college and university teaching, the student will continue study beyond the bachelor’s degree in graduate school,
specialized art school or apprenticeships.

Major in Art — General Program

General Track in Studio Art

The requirements for a studio track in the general art major are a minimum of 8.0 course credits:

• ART 111 — Two-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
• ART 112 — Three-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
• ART 130 — Beginning Drawing, 1.0 credit
• ART 155 — History in Art I, 1.0 credit OR ART 156 — History in Art II, 1.0 credit
• 1.0 course credit in art history
• 3.0 course credits in studio art

Senior studio art majors are expected to participate in the Senior Exhibition. It is recommended that studio art majors complete the second art history course during their sophomore or junior year.

General Art History Track

The art history track emphasizes the role of the visual arts in cultural history. Fundamental studio experience, as well as courses in art history, provide a basis for careers in such areas as museum work, art conservation, curatorship, research and college teaching. In most of these careers, graduate work beyond the bachelor’s degree is expected.

The requirements for an art history track in the general art major are a minimum of 8.5 course credits:

•  ART 111 — Two-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 112 — Three-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 155 — History in Art I, 1.0 credit
•  ART 156 — History in Art II, 1.0 credit
•  3.0 art history course credits from:
–  ART 300 — May Seminar, 1.0 credit
–  ART 364 — Greek and Roman Art, 1.0 credit
–  ART 365 — Art of the Italian Renaissance, 1.0 credit
–  ART 367 — 20th Century Art, 1.0 credit
–  ART 372 — Islamic Art, 0.5 credit
–  ART 373 — Pre-Columbian Art, 0.5 credit
•  ART 480 — Independent Study, 0.5 to 1.0 credit
•  1.0 additional course credit in studio art

General art history track students are strongly urged to take at least one 0.5 credit course in a non-Western art tradition.

Major in Art — Preprofessional Program

Preprofessional Concentration in Art Studio

The requirements for a preprofessional concentration in art studio are a minimum of 12.0 course credits:

• ART 111 — Two-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 112 — Three-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 130 — Beginning Drawing, 1.0 credit
•  ART 155 — History in Art I, 1.0 credit OR ART 156 — History in Art II, 1.0 credit
•  ART 367 — 20th Century Art, 1.0 credit
•  Two courses from ART 200-300 level studio courses, 2.0 credits
•  ART 401-409 — Intermediate Studio courses, (two at 0.5 or one at 1.0), 1.0 credit
•  Three courses of art electives — ART 200, 300, 400 level courses with no more than 1.0 of art history, 3.0 credits
•  ART 440 — Portfolio Preparation, 1.0 credit

Senior art studio concentration students are required to participate in the Senior Exhibition.

Preprofessional Concentration in Art History

The requirements for a preprofessional concentration in art history are a minimum of 12.0 course credits:

•  ART 111 — Two-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 112 — Three-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 155 — History in Art I, 1.0 credit
•  ART 156 — History in Art II, 1.0 credit
•  Four art history electives of 300-level courses, 4.0 credits
•  Studio elective, 1.0 credit
•  ART 420 — Senior Thesis, 1.0 credit
•  ART 480 — Independent Study, 1.0 credit
•  PHIL 333 — Philosophy of Art, 1.0 credit
•  1.0 supporting course credit from history, literature, music, philosophy, classics, religion and theatre.

Courses should be directly connected to the student’s primary field of interest, and they should be seen as the means by which the history of art can be holistically understood as a broad, sociocultural field of study. Preprofessional art history majors are strongly encouraged to take a minor in either French or German as well as any language necessary for their area of specialization.

Preprofessional Concentration in Graphic Design

The requirements for a preprofessional concentration in graphic design are a minimum of 12.0 course credits:

•  ART 111 — Two-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 112 — Three-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 130 — Beginning Drawing, 1.0 credit
•  ART 155 — History in Art I, 1.0 credit OR ART 156 — History in Art II, 1.0 credit

•  ART 368, COM 368 — Digital Photography, 1.0 credit OR ART 236, COM 236 — Introduction to the Photographic Process, 1.0 credit
•  ART 370 — Graphic Design, 1.0 credit
•  ART 407 — Intermediate Graphic Design, 1.0 credit
•  ART 420 — Senior Project, 1.0 credit

The requirements for a minor in art are 5.0 course credits:

•  2.0 additional studio or art history course credits

Art Education Major with a Teaching License, Grades K-12

The requirements for an art education major with a teaching license, grades K-12, are 13.0 course credits;
plus 8.0 course credits in education:

•  ART 111 — Two-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 112 — Three-Dimensional Foundations, 1.0 credit
•  ART 155 — History in Art I, 1.0 credit
•  ART 156 — History in Art II, 1.0 credit
•  1.0 course credit in each of the following seven studio areas (see course listings below):
–  painting
–  ceramics
–  sculpture
–  printmaking
–  graphic design
–  photography
•  Two 0.5-credit intermediate studio courses, as concentration areas (ART 401-409)
•  PHIL 333 — Philosophy of Art, 1.0 credit
•  Successful completion of the secondary/K-12 curriculum requirements (8.0 course credits) (see Education: Curriculum in Secondary/K-12 Education).

EDUC 371 — Methods of Teaching in Art: Elementary and Secondary, 1.0 credit, is the required methods of teaching course. Senior art teaching majors are expected to participate in the Senior Exhibition. It is recommended that ART 155 — History in Art be taken during the freshman or sophomore year. PHIL 333 — Philosophy of Art should be taken in the junior year.

The teaching major in art qualifies graduates to teach art from kindergarten through grade 12. It is assumed that graduate work will be undertaken during the teaching career.
