1. Why are freshmen and sophomores required to live on campus?

We want you to succeed! Studies show students who live on campus during their first two years of college are more likely to graduate, and to do so in four years, than those living off-campus. On-campus students are also more likely to have higher GPAs and higher levels of satisfaction with their college experience due to their increased interaction with faculty and other students.

Our housing policy states: if you live at home in the area with your parents or have received a special exemption approved by the Residence Life Office, you are not required to live on campus. However, we strongly encourage you to consider living on campus, as it is an excellent way to meet people, become more involved with activities and adjust to college life.


2. How is my roommate assigned? May I request a particular roommate?

Every housing application is carefully reviewed and efforts are made to match you with a roommate who has similar interests and living habits.

If you have a friend with whom you would like to live, you must include his or her name on your housing application. That person must then request to room with you as well. Once we receive confirmation that both parties have made the request, the match is made and you are assigned a room.


3. When will I find out my room and roommate assignment?

You should receive your room and roommate assignment around mid-July. You will receive a mailing that will include your room assignment, your roommate's name and contact information.


4. Do you have co-ed residence halls?

Hallett, Erickson, Hoyum and Livedalen halls are co-ed by wing and Brown Hall is co-ed by unit. Fjelstad and Park Region halls typically house females only. The campus apartments, for upper class students, are all co-ed. These apartments include: Bogstad Manor, Bogstad East, the International Center and the Townhouses.


5. Are the residence hall rooms furnished?

All rooms are furnished with beds, mattresses and mattress covers, dressers, closets, desks or study tables, chairs, window coverings and telephones. While all of the college furnishings must remain in the room for the entire year, you can add some of your own small pieces of furniture as space allows.


6. What should I bring with me for my room?

You'll definitely want to personalize and decorate your new home away from home. Common items are:

  • computer
  • refrigerator (4.5 cu ft and 1.5 amps or less)
  • microwave (1200 watts or less)
  • additional furnishings like TV, DVD player, stereo, etc.
  • posters, photos and other items to decorate your room

There are a few things not allowed in residence hall rooms, including halogen lamps, pets other than fish, rubber-backed carpeting, candles or other open flame items, hot plates and alcohol or alcohol containers. When you arrive on campus, your resident assistant will review the policies with you to make sure you don't have any prohibited items.


7. Are the residence halls open during breaks?

Residence halls remain open during breaks with the exception of the Christmas break, during which allt are closed, except the campus apartments.


8. Can I bring a car, bike or motorcycle?

Yes, but you may not need them. Excellent transportation services are available in Fargo-Moorhead and Concordia is located within walking distance of shopping centers, downtown Moorhead and churches. Daily bus service operates throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area and special bus services are available for students.

If you choose to bring a car or motorcycle to campus you will need to get a parking permit from Campus Security. If you bring a bike, be sure to bring a lock and consider taking it home in the colder months instead of trying to find storage on campus.


9. Do I need my own computer?

We have several computer labs around campus, including labs in most of the residence halls, but you may want to bring your own. When it comes time for tests and papers, the labs can fill up quickly. All residence halls are wired for high-speed Internet, connections that work with both Mac and PC computers.


10. How do I get involved on campus?

One of the best ways to get involved in just by living on campus. Your resident assistant will coordinate numerous activities for your floor and entire hall, in addition to being a great resource for other organizations and activities on campus. You'll meet many new people in your residence hall, classes and during Orientation events.
