Scholarship in Visual Arts

Eligibility
To be eligible for a Scholarship in the Visual Arts, you must be an incoming first-year student accepted for admission to Concordia, have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and exhibit proficiency or intense interest in painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, ceramics, graphic design, museum studies or art history.

This scholarship recognizes your potential participation and leadership as a collegiate-level artist or art historian and may be added to a Presidential Distinction Award, Faculty Scholarship, Excellence Scholarship, Music Performance, Theatre or Forensics Scholarship. Many recipients of this award will also qualify for additional financial scholarships and grants, in which case the Scholarship in the Visual Arts may become a component of a larger financial aid package.

The initial screening will be based on your scholarship application, letters of recommendation and a digital portfolio.

Application Procedures
Application requirements include two letters of recommendation, a resume of your artistic or art historical background (including courses taken and involvement in arts organizations), other academic activities and a short essay. You are also asked to submit a digital portfolio on a CD. If your interest is in art history or museum studies, we ask that you submit an essay in lieu of the portfolio.

To apply for a Scholarship in the Visual Arts:

1. Be accepted to Concordia for the 2009 fall semester by Monday, Jan. 12, 2009.

2. Complete the Scholarship in the Visual Arts application, including the artistic resume and a brief essay (250 words) on “The Role of the Visual Arts in My Life.”

3. Submit your portfolio of up to 10 of your best pieces by Jan. 12, 2009. Your portfolio should be on a CD and mailed with your application. Photographs of works should be labeled with your name, the piece number (1-10 in your digital portfolio) dimensions, medium and title. Sample JPEG label: Olson, 1, 24x30”, acrylic, “Portrait.” For sculpture and ceramic, two views of one piece may be provided.

Note: Digital portfolios and writing samples will not be returned.

A. Studio Art – Portfolio of works in any studio medium (clay, graphite, oil paint, plaster, watercolor, original prints, etc.) or combination of media
B. Graphic Design – Portfolio of works in any areas of design interest (layouts, posters, illustrations, logos, Web pages, newspaper, yearbook, etc.)
C. History of Art and/or Museum Studies – In lieu of a portfolio, please submit an essay of at least 1,000 words that exemplifies your writing and research skills.

4. Provide two letters of recommendation from art professionals or art teachers. Those writing the recommendations should evaluate your artistic accomplishments, general abilities in the arts, writing skills, character and potential. References should also explain how long and in what capacity they’ve known you. Recommendations should be returned to you in confidential, sealed envelopes.

Selection
Semifinalists will be invited to campus for an interview Friday, March 13 to discuss their art and goals with members of the art faculty, tour studios and visit local museums. Time will also be provided to meet with faculty in other academic disciplines. Semifinalists will also have the option to stay on campus with current Concordia students. Scholarship in the Visual Arts recipients will be selected following their on-campus participation.
