“The Maker and The Machine: Computer-Generated Art by Four Sculptors”

Minneapolis-based sculptors and Minneapolis College of Art and Design instructors Don Myhre, Leslie Kelman, Patrick Carmody and Patrick Brennen present sculpture created with advanced computer-generated designs such as Rapid- Prototype process and CNC technology, which utilize computer-generated designs to produce the sculpture. This exhibit showcases these techniques, featuring a wide range of size, media and subject matter; it shows how technology is changing and challenging traditional sculpting methods and the studio environment. Myhre will discuss these issues through demonstrations and a gallery talk as part of the 2009 Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium, “Where is the We in an iWorld? Technology and Learning in the 21st Century.”
“Transformations to Tricksters: Selections from 35 Years of Sculpture, The Art of Duane Mickelson”

This retrospective exhibition celebrates the career, creativity, craftsmanship and imagination of sculptor and Concordia College art instructor Duane Mickelson. Sculptures in a variety of media trace Mickelson’s artistic evolution from his work as a student at Concordia, the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and long-time instructor at Concordia. Cyrus M. Running Gallery will exhibit Mickelson’s earlier work and more recent work will be shown at the Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead.
The exhibit at the Rourke will preview from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 with the public opening on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m.
“Encounters: Photography by Sheldon Green”

Green will speak at 5 p.m.
“Encounters” presents portraits of people encountered through the college’s study abroad programs by Concordia College photographer Sheldon Green. The locations range from crowded streets in India to small villages in Tanzania’s safari country, to farmers markets in China and ornate mosques in Egypt. The photos present how the people of these countries live and work, and how Concordia faculty and students might be able to interact with them. The work covers a 13-year period from 1994 to 2007.

Mills will speak in the gallery at 6 p.m.
Jennifer Mills, a Concordia College art department graduate and current Master of Fine Arts student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, brings a performance installation to stimulate her audience and challenge traditional uses of the gallery setting. Due to the performance component of this show, restricted gallery hours for this exhibition will be noon-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and Concordia students will serve as participants in the performance.
