CONORDIA TO HOST FIRST HIGH SCHOOL HONOR BAND WEEKEND
Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., welcomes 75 students from six upper Midwest states to campus April 11-13 in the first Concordia High School Honor Band Weekend. Students from Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota and Wisconsin were invited to apply and send an audition CD. Seventy-five of the 160 instrumentalists who applied were accepted. The participants will have chamber sessions with Concordia studio faculty on Friday afternoon, which will be followed by a master class with the renowned Empire Brass. Students will also attend two concert performances – the Concordia Instrumental Collage Concert on Friday evening and the Empire Brass Quintet Concert on Saturday evening.
These top-level instrumental students spend a portion of Saturday and Sunday in rehearsals together for a performance at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 13. The repertoire to be performed includes compositions and arrangements by Frank Ticheli, guest composer/conductor.
Ticheli received his doctoral and masters degrees in composition from The University of Michigan. He is well known for his works for concert band, many of which have become standards in the repertoire.
Additional information about the weekend, including a complete schedule of events, can be found at www.cord.edu/dept/music/honorband/index.php. The Instrumental Collage concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 11 in Memorial Auditorium and the High School Honor Band concert at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 13, also in Memorial, are both free and open to the public. The Cultural Events Series concert by Empire Brass is a ticketed event. For information about that performance or tickets, please call the Cultural Events office at (218) 299-4366.
