19TH ANNUAL DAY OF PERCUSSION AT CONCORDIA
The Concordia College Department of Music in cooperation with The Percussive Arts Society and the Lake Region Arts Council present the 19th annual Day of Percussion featuring guests David Friedman, Dave Samuels and Ed Soph from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5 in Memorial Auditorium on the Moorhead, Minn., campus. That evening a concert by Double Image (Friedman and Samuels) will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial. All events are free and open to the public.
A concert by the Percussion Ensemble and Marimba Choir will take place at 4 p.m. in Memorial. The day’s activities also include performances by the Concordia Jazz Ensemble I with guest Ed Soph, Concordia West African Drumming Ensembles and Viva Marimba. Soph will also lead drum clinics and Friedman and Samuels will lead a “Mallet-Keyboard” clinic.
Soph, whose career as a performer, recording artist, author and teacher, spans almost 50 years, is professor of music at his alma mater, the University of North Texas. The vibe-marimba duo that makes up Double Image, David Friedman and Dave Samuels has performed for more than three decades. In 1974 these two masters of mallet percussion created the unique combination of vibraphone and marimba and a totally new sound and approach emerged. Friedman teaches at the University of the Arts in Berlin and Samuels serves on the faculty at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and also performs with The Caribbean Jazz Project.
