Student Presents at National Conference

wiki Research on Wikipedia assignments brought Megan John '13, Randall, Minn., to a national conference.

 She presented her poster, “The Benefits of Traditional vs. Wikipedia Research Assignments for Introductory Psychology Students,” at the Association for Psychological Science’s 25th annual convention in Washington, D.C.

John described how students in Dr. Mona Ibrahim’s psychology class were assigned to expand and improve Wikipedia entries instead of completing a more traditional major paper. John worked with Ibrahim to evaluate the effectiveness of the assignment.

The encyclopedia’s influence is now so pervasive that professional organizations encourage scholars and their students to improve and expand its content. The Association for Psychological Science has its own Wikipedia initiative.

Ibrahim is one of the pioneers of the project.

“Wikipedia is the first go-to for anyone researching, myself included,” she said in a Concordia Magazine article published in spring 2012. “It is the first place most of us go to find out the basics.”
