Howard Mukanda at Cultural NightHoward Mukanda ’14, Zimbabwe, was honored when he was elected president of the student council at the International Summer School in Oslo, Norway.

Every summer, a number of Concordia students attend the International Summer School. Out of the seven who attended this summer, two are Peace Scholars.

As a Peace Scholar, Mukanda knew he wanted to meet people and get involved, so he decided to campaign for president.

The student council president is responsible for running weekly meetings, managing the budget for activities and keeping the rest of the student council on task.

As president, Mukanda also helped coordinate the International Cultural Night where students were invited to showcase their country by sharing ethnic food, performances and information.

Finally, at the end of the six-week school session, Mukanda gave a farewell address on behalf of the student body.

Mukanda says there were usually one or two activities happening each night, ranging from school-sponsored excursions to student council-sponsored trivia nights and karaoke.

“The school was a beehive of activity,” Mukanda says. “Everything seemed appealing to do.”
