Business Student Interns for Federal Reserve

Matt Gantz ’14, Eagan, Minn., is taking his knowledge in finances to the next level working side by side with employees of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C.
He interned this summer with the board that oversees the nation’s central banking system. Gantz is assisting financial analysts in revamping the system’s cost and financial accounting manuals, as well as taking part in financial management reviews of the individual Federal Reserve Banks.
The experience has taught him about perfection and people.
“There is a culture of perfection, and that is plain through employees’ effort to be precise and accurate in their reports,” Gantz says.
But the individuals within the government compounds are still people.
“They have real lives outside work. In my mind, they are no longer faceless representatives of some of the largest government regulation bodies in the world,” he says.
Internships like this require a highly motivated and responsible student, says Dr. Albert Kagan, professor of research in management information systems.
“Receiving this internship is a big deal and doesn’t happen often,” says Kagan.
Concordia’s liberal arts curriculum gave Gantz a balanced wealth of knowledge in both his areas of study.
“I was hired for both my finance/accounting knowledge and my ability to write and edit in a coherent manner,” says Gantz.
From this experience, Gantz hopes to learn more about practical applications in his studies.
“Its one thing to read a book and understand an economic theory or accounting process, but it is so much more satisfying to see the actual implementation of my studies on a national and global scale,” he says.
