Dr. Bryan BishopThe Student Government Association has awarded Dr. Bryan Bishop, associate professor of biology, its 2013 Distinguished Service Award.

Bishop was cited for his leadership in classroom, laboratory and field teaching.

“Dr. Bishop challenges students to think critically and to look at other perspectives we have never considered before,” says Kelly Knutson ’15, Grand Forks, N.D., who nominated Bishop.

“The encouragement and excitement he shares with students has in impact. You know a teacher loves what they do when they passionately push students to become engaged and active learners,” Knutson says.

Knutson says he met Bishop during his first semester at Concordia in ecology class.

“His teaching and passion for the environment sparked my interest to declare environmental studies as one of my majors,” says Knutson. “Since then, we’ve kept meeting and most of our talks end up discussing environmental issues. It’s fun to share a passion with a professor.”

In his service on the President’s Sustainability Council, Bishop works to improve the growing campus discussion on sustainability issues. He gets students involved on campus and beyond, and often takes students on field trips to expose them to impacts on the environment that humans have caused and encourages them to consider finding a way to fix them.

“He always says everything is connected and we can truly change things if we become well informed and act,” says Knutson. “Dr. Bishop actively teaches us to be engaged in the world.”

A native of Texas, Bishop joined the biology department in 1998. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, his master’s from Ohio University and his doctorate from Michigan State University.
