Students Receive Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad

STUDENTS RECEIVES BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AWARD TO STUDY ABROAD FOR THE SUMMER


       Concordia College (Moorhead, Minn.,) juniors Karissa Mehr and Ryan Smith were selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, to participate in a study abroad or international internship program during the summer 2013 academic term. More than 700 American undergraduate students from 270 colleges and universities across the U.S. have been selected to receive the award.
       Mehr, the daughter of Steven Mehr, Saint Augusta, Minn., and Patti Clymer, St. Cloud, Minn., is in the Summer School Abroad Program and will be studying “Into the Wine Dark Sea: Ancient Greek Philosophy in the Greek Islands in Santorini.” Smith, the son of Jon and Pauline Smith, Zimmerman, Minn., is in the Summer Field Study Program studying “The Ecology of East Africa.”
       Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad program costs. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. 
       The Gilman Scholarship Program was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and since then more than 13,000 students nationwide have received the award.
       Concordia College is a four-year liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offering more than 60 majors, including 18 honors majors and 12 preprofessional programs.
