STUDENT LECTURE ON RETHINKING MARRIAGE AND EQUALITY
Concordia College senior Riah Roe will present a lecture as part of the Student Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Birkeland Alumni Lounge. The lecture, “Rethinking Marriage: Stepping Stones to Equality,” is free and open to the public.
Roe explored the issue of same-sex marriage in conjunction with the current political climate. The analysis critiques the way that parties on both sides of the issue have characterized legal marriage as static, natural, and the ultimate goal for any person wishing to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Roe’s analysis proposes that we need to step back and analyze not just who is allowed to marry, but how this decision bestows legal and social privileges to only certain relationship styles.
Roe’s faculty sponsor is Dr. Susan M. O’Shaughnessy, chair and Alwin C. Carus and M. Elisabeth Carus Professor of Philosophy.
