RENOWNED INTERFAITH LEADER TO SPEAK AT CONCORDIA
Dr. Eboo Patel, a national leader for interfaith cooperation, will give the keynote address at Concordia’s Opening Convocation at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30. Patel will also give a public lecture Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center. It will be followed by a book signing at 8:30 p.m. in the Knutson Campus Center Atrium.
Patel’s convocation address will focus on his book, “Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation.” It is the 2012-13 Common Read for the campus. Patel’s evening lecture will focus on his new book, “Sacred Ground: Pluralism, Prejudice, and the Promise of America.” The book illustrates that even though suspicion and animosity have increased toward American Muslims since 9/11, faith can be a bridge of cooperation. Advance copies of “Sacred Ground” will be for sale at the Cobber Bookstore and in the atrium.
Patel is the founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core, a Chicago-based global interfaith organization. He has a doctorate in the sociology of religion and served on President Obama’s inaugural Advisory Council of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Named by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Leaders of 2009, Patel regularly contributes to the Washington Post, NPR and CNN.
