Transforming Teaching

masters When Rebecca Sheldon '06 first started looking for a master's program, she was discouraged. It seemed like her only option was to study Spanish literature – something that wouldn't help her teach foreign languages at the middle school level.

Then she discovered Concordia's Master of Education in World Language Instruction program and immediately knew it was her answer.

"It was exactly what I wanted – a program that combined technology and foreign language education," she says.

The program also brought new life to her teaching. Before she started the program, she had a hard time feeling motivated to teach. But after one year in the program, she had transformed her middle school classroom from an exam-based course to a project-based course with laptops, and she found she actually loved teaching.

Now Sheldon is teaching first-graders in a Spanish immersion program, and she has been able to use the methodologies she observed at Concordia Language Villages to keep her students moving and engaged in learning.

"I know the knowledge I've gained will help for years to come," she says.
