Mission Trip Brings Middle-Schoolers to Campus

A group of 47 middle-schoolers are getting a taste of Concordia. They may be a bit young for college classes, but they have been enjoying their accommodations in Fjelstad Hall, meals at Dining Services, group meetings on the lawn and the chance to make a positive difference in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

"It has been a huge treat to be at Concordia," says Cindy Jones, middle school director at Constance Free Church, Andover, Minn. "The students get a kick out of being on a college campus. It makes them feel more mature."

The students from Constance Free are working with many organizations in the Fargo-Moorhead metro area. The theme of their trip is "Witness, " and they are learning to show Christ's love through their actions whether that is weeding at the Red River Zoo, sorting clothing at the Dakota Boys Ranch Thrift Stores or helping a single mother at the YWCA.

Concordia's summer programs staff members have helped to make everything come together – making contact with service organizations, arranging housing and being available whenever the group has needed them.

"We feel well-supported," says Jones. "The student workers are so friendly."

The summer programs student workers also enjoy serving the groups on campus.

Teresa Hatfield '14, Golden Valley, Minn., was excited to connect the group with some organizations she has volunteered with, such as the Dorothy Day House and Ronald McDonald House. One of the favorite parts of her job is the fast-paced problem solving during a group's stay.

"I love thinking on my feet and doing my best to make people happy," she says.
