'Memorial' Featured in New York Concert
Sep 09, 2011
A composition by the conductor of The Concordia Choir will be featured in a New York City concert commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.Dr. René Clausen will conduct "Memorial" on Sunday at Lincoln Center. The 300 singers who will perform under his direction include about 30 Concordia alumni and 50 members of the Master Chorale of Fargo-Moorhead, which is directed by Clausen.
In 2003, The American Choral Directors Association commissioned Clausen to write "Memorial" to commemorate the attack on the World Trade Center. He wrote it to promote healing and understanding. Dr. Roy Hammerling, religion, wrote the lyrics.
When performed in February of that year at Lincoln Center, "Memorial" brought many audience members to tears. The four-part piece moves from an illusion of a beautiful fall day to the harsh attacks to prayers for compassion.
