Grad in Opening Act of Rose Parade

When Grand Marshal Paula Deen began the Rose Parade Saturday in Pasadena, Calif., Megan Luebke ’09 was close at hand.

Luebke performed in the opening act with Up With People. Luebke traveled with Up With People for six months in 2009. She now works as the marketing manager for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA.

But when the chance came along for Up With People alumni to come back and perform, Luebke threw her hat in the ring and was one of 40 performers selected.

“We are the first act to walk in the parade escorting Grand Marshal Paula Deen,” Luebke says. “Only five Up With People students are on the float, the rest of us are walking the entire 6 miles.”

In its 122nd year, the Rose Parade is a huge undertaking. Luebke spent the days leading up to the parade in full-day rehearsals. This year’s parade featured 47 floats, 22 bands and 22 equestrians.

“This opportunity is fantastic,” Luebke says. “I'm so honored to have been selected for such a prestigious performance.”
