GUEST TUBA ARTIST MAKES SIXTH VISIT TO CONCORDIA
The Concordia College Music Department presents the sixth annual visit by guest tuba artist Dean A. Somerville in a recital at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21 in Christiansen Recital Hall. Somerville will be accompanied by Dr. Sarah Kahl, a former member of Concordia’s piano faculty; Dr. Nathaniel Dickey on euphonium, trombone, and tuba; and students Joel Leeman ’13 and Vance Blankers ’12 on trombone.
Former tubist and soloist with the U.S. Army Band, Somerville is also a composer and arranger of music for tuba and other instruments. A noted pedagogue, Somerville studied with legendary tuba teachers Arnold Jacobs and Donald Butterfield.
Somerville will perform music by Mozart, John Stevens, Henri Tomasi and several of his own compositions. The concert is free and open to the public. In addition to this recital, Somerville will be making several appearances at local public schools during his visit.
