Concordia to Hold Commencement

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., will present approximately 481 bachelor’s degrees and four master of education degrees during its commencement ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2 in Memorial Auditorium. George C. Halvorson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente will speak at the ceremony.

Spanish Play "Aguila o Sol" to be Performed

The Spanish and Hispanic Studies department at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., will present Sabina Berman’s play, “Aguila o Sol (Eagle or Sun)” at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 21 in the Morrie Jones Conference Center A-B, Knutson Campus Center. The play, a mostly Spanish performance, is free and open to the public.

Karla Hornstein Awarded Flaat

Sannes Named Region Chair

Amy Sannes, director of the Academic Enhancement and Writing Center at Concordia College Moorhead, Minn., has been elected region chair, a national leadership position, for the North Central Region 6 of the National Academic Advising Association. Sannes will assume the role at the end of the NACADA annual conference in October in Orlando, Fla., and serve until October 2012.

Day of Percussion at Concordia

The Concordia College Musical Organizations and Department of Music will celebrate 20 years of Day of Percussion 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Saturday, April 17 in Memorial Auditorium on the Moorhead, Minn., campus. Featured guests include Bob Becker, Sammy K and John Tafoya. The day’s activities, including clinics and performances, concludes with the Concordia Percussion Ensemble and Marimba Choir concert at 4 p.m. featuring some of the guest artists.

Concordia College Music Organizations will present the Senior Honors Concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 27 in Memorial Auditorium. The orchestra is conducted by Bruce Houglum and will feature seniors Sean Steiner, voice; Alexander Corbett, violin; Laura Auer, voice and Nathan Hance, piano. Musical selections include works by G. F. Handel, Sergei Prokofiev, Vincenzo Bellini and Benjamin Britten.

Concordia Cancels Classes Tuesday to Assist Moorhead Flood Preparation

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., classes will be canceled on Tuesday, March 16 to allow students, faculty and staff to assist with community flood preparations. After consulting the City of Moorhead about its volunteer needs, Concordia is canceling classes on Tuesday, March 16. Monday’s classes will continue as scheduled and classes will resume on Wednesday, March 17, with no further cancellations anticipated.  

Fifth Annual National Book Awards

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., has released a new Web site virtual tour that integrates the latest video- and flash-driven technology with a highly personalized online experience. Tabbed the Virtual Tour Experience, the interactive presentation features HD video, dynamic special effects and the talents of five student tour guides. The project was completed in partnership with Sundog Inc., Fargo, N.D.

Bjerga '95 Installed as NPC President

CONCORDIA GRADUATE INSTALLED AS NATIONAL PRESS CLUB PRESIDENT Alan Bjerga, a 1995 Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., alumnus and a reporter for Bloomberg News, was installed today as the 103rd president of the National Press Club. Bjerga accepted the gavel from past President Sylvia Smith, who stood in for President Donna Leinwand. Leinwand, a reporter for USA Today, was dispatched to Haiti to cover the earthquake and rescue efforts so was not able to attend the meeting.

Husband of Concordia Alumna Dies in Haiti

The Concordia community grieves with Renee Splichal Larson ’04 whose husband, Ben Larson, died in the Haiti earthquake. Ben was a Luther graduate and a student at Wartburg Theological Seminary.

Russell Peterson, assistant professor of music at Concordia College, will perform a faculty saxophone recital in conjunction with the release of his latest CD at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15 in Christiansen Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. The CD, “Russ Peterson and Friends: Jazz/Rock Saxophone,” features 20 different musicians from the Midwest and will be available for purchase at the recital for $10.

Prominent Alumnus Dies at His Home in Africa

The Rev. J. David Simonson, legendary Lutheran missionary in East Africa, died Monday, Aug. 16, at his home in Arusha, Tanzania. A 1951 graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., Simonson spent his entire four-decade career working among the Maasai tribe in Africa.
