Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Concordia’s  vocal jazz ensemble provides all kinds of opportunities for students interested in the world of jazz – from singing to playing in the rhythm section and working as sound technicians. Their repertoire includes music of the Swingle Singers, New York Voices, The Real Group, Manhattan Transfer and Glad. Auditions are held in the fall and the ensemble performs two home concerts a year, along with various run out concerts each semester.

Director
Kathie Brekke, a vocalist and pianist, directs the Vocal Jazz Ensembles and is an active jazz musician in Fargo-Moorhead and the surrounding region. She earned a master’s degree in vocal music education, with an emphasis on jazz pedagogy, from Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Currently, Brekke performs weekly with her jazz combo 42nd Street at Jazz Night at Basie’s located in Fargo Ramada Plaza Suites. She teaches piano at Minnesota State University Moorhead, directs Jasper’s Theatre in Park Rapids, Minn., and entertains for conventions around the area. In addition to 42nd Street, Brekke arranges music and performs with a nine-piece gospel band, the Apostles Blues Band, who have performed at We Fest, Spirit Fest and many other venues around the region. She is a music leader at Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church in Moorhead and has recorded five CDs since 2000.
