Biography•Dr. Jeff Meyer


Dr. Jeff Meyer teaches courses in music history, music theory, world music, film music, and worship.  He also directs Pempamsie, a West African drumming and dance ensemble, and leads study abroad trips to Prague, Ghana, and Great Britain.  Dr. Meyer came to Concordia in the fall of 2000 and has since been involved in Bush Foundation grants on formative evaluation, chair of Graduate Programs and Core Curriculum committees, summer study grants in lute performance, and four Centennial Grants: on the lutesongs of John Dowland, ethnic music in the Fargo-Moorhead area, the generative analysis of rhythm in world music, and new practices in teaching aural skills. 

Dr. Meyer received his B.Mus. in ethnic music theory from Wheaton College (Illinois), a M.A. in music theory from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Minnesota.  He has presented papers on the historically-based analysis of early English music and analysis of world music at the South-Central Renaissance Conference, the American Musicological Society's Midwest Chapter meeting, the West Coast Conference on Music Analysis, and the International Conference on Music Analysis.  His studies in world music have included north Indian tabla, Ghanaian drumming and gyil, and field work in Papua New Guinea (the results of which are included in the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music).  His film music work has centered on the film scores of Ennio Morricone.
