Cobbers Soar to Postseason Prominence
Concordia was the only MIAC school to have all seven fall and winter athletic teams qualify in the sports that have conference playoffs. Four teams reached the league championship game, and two of those teams claimed titles.
And Phil Moenkedick '11 captured his second consecutive national championship. Yet, winning is only part of the story. Academic achievement adds to Concordia’s distinction in 2010-11. The Cobbers had 22 players from fall sports teams earn Academic All-Conference honors.
Volleyball
All-Americans Jenna Green ’12, Dilworth, Minn., and Katie Vohnoutka ’12, Eden Prairie, Minn., led the Cobbers to the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in eight years. Amy Sykora ’12, Rapid City, S.D., was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
Men’s Soccer
The Cobbers reached the MIAC playoff title game in the program’s first-ever appearance in postseason play. All-MIAC and All-Region standout Riley McGlynn ’12, Hampstead, N.C./Bozeman (Mont.), was the first player in program history to earn Capital One Academic All-American First Team honors. Marco Riboli ’11, Bergamo, Italy, and Alex Dahl ’11, Fargo, N.D., earned All-MIAC honors, and Kyle Kazemi ’11, Arvada, Colo., was named to the MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
Women’s Soccer
Led by two-time All-American Sam Johnson ’11 (left), Fargo, N.D., the Cobbers won the MIAC playoff championship for the third time in five years. They advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in five years. Johnson, Sue Obermiller ’11, Fargo, Erika Swenson ’11, Fargo, Ali Nelson ’13, Maple Grove, Minn., and Sarah Rounds ’13, Plymouth, Minn., were honored as All-Region selections.
Men’s Hockey
MIAC Coach of the Year Chris Howe (left) guided the Cobbers to the conference tournament championship game for the first time since the league went to a five-team playoff format in 2001-02. Pat Deitz ’13, Moorhead, Erick Galt ’12, Fargo, N.D., Caleb Suderman ’14, Winkler, Manitoba, and Nick Thielen ’12, Moorhead, were named MIAC All-Conference.
Women’s Hockey
Katelyn Dold ’12, St. Cloud, Minn., led the MIAC in scoring for the second straight season as the Cobbers set a school record for wins in a season (15) on their way to the MIAC playoffs for the second time in three years. Dold, Allie Bondy ’12, Moorhead, and Jenna Westerham ’13, Wayzata, Minn., all earned MIAC All-Conference honors.
Men’s Basketball
All-MIAC performer John Fraase ’11, Bismarck, N.D., became the first player in school history to score 1,000 career points and collect 500 career rebounds as the Cobbers qualified for the MIAC playoffs. Darrin Olmscheid ’11, Buffalo, Minn., also earned All-MIAC accolades.
Women’s Basketball
The Cobbers won the MIAC postseason title and reached the NCAA tournament for the third time in six years. Erica Nord ’11, Wolverton, Minn., and Maggie Bauernfeind ’11, Rosemount, Minn., were named All-MIAC players. Nord was also the only men’s or women’s basketball player in the MIAC to earn Academic All-American honors.
Swimming and Diving to Distinction
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America awarded Scholar All-American Status to Concordia’s swimming and diving team. The Cobbers’ 3.40 team GPA was the highest in the MIAC and the 14th highest in the nation. Katie Coleman ’11, Marshall, Minn., broke four school records at the MIAC conference meet.Swenson Named NCAA Postgraduate Scholar
Erika Swenson ’11, Fargo, N.D., is the latest Concordia athlete to earn a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The MIAC All-Conference soccer player carries a 3.98 GPA as a healthcare management and classical studies double major. Swenson will be pursuing graduate school opportunities in healthcare administration. She was the only female athlete in the MIAC to receive the NCAA honor for fall sports.Two-Time National Wrestling Champ
Phil Moenkedick ’11 (left), Perham, Minn., won his second consecutive national wrestling title, leading the Cobbers to seventh place in the nation – their best finish ever. Justin Berns ’11, Perham, earned All-American honors for the second straight year by taking fifth place, and Tom Bouressa ’13, Alexandria, Minn., captured fourth to earn All-American honors. Ben Presler ’12 Royalton, Minn., Daron Hohbein ’12, Mandan, N.D., and Nathan Schmitz ’13, Perham, also competed at the national meet.
