choir The Concordia Choir impressed audiences on the East Coast with its outstanding musicality on its annual national tour.

A review of the choir’s Feb. 19 appearance at National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., called the concert program “a magnificent evening of choral music.”

Dr. René Clausen’s “expressive conducting” brings a “sense of joy and buoyancy to the sound” of the choir, writes Patrick McCoy in the Kennedy Center “Examiner,” a publication highlighting arts in the nation’s capitol.

The choir sings compositions by Mozart and Bach “beautifully with a sense of devout reverence, further enhanced by a lovely command of the choral phrases.”

One of the choir’s emerging signature pieces, Whitacre’s “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine,” is full of “swelling crescendos, gorgeous suspensions and sublime harmonies.” Setting the piece apart is the use of such non-traditional vocal sounds as hand drums, tambourine and bells, “all creating a mystical atmosphere that is out of this world!”
