Under the guidance of head coach Clay Nagel, the Cobber wrestling program has risen into the national limelight in the past four seasons. Concordia was ranked in the top 20 of the nation the entire season for the second straight year in 2011. They finished the season by placing seventh at the NCAA Division III National Meet - the highest finish in program history. The 2011 season also saw a record-setting three All-Americans and six national meet participants.

Phil Moenkedick became the first Cobber wrestler to earn back-to-back national championships as he captured the 184-lb weight class in 2010 and 2011 and finished his career with an astonishing 135-10 record. He set the school record for most wins and pins in a career. He was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team for two straight seasons and was a NWCA Scholar All-American for three straight years.

Nagel and Associate Head Coach Matt Nagel recruit the top wrestlers in the area every year and pride themselves on giving local student/athletes the chance to compete at the national level. The two also put together one of the toughest schedules in all of Division III as they are yearly participants in the National Dual Tournament and have participated in the Las Vegas Duals Meet for two of the past three seasons.

Phil Moenkedick & Justin Berns
Pride
of Perham
Teammates since high school in Perham, Minn., Phil Moenkedick ‘11 and Justin Berns ‘11 are the catalysts of Concordia’s rise to prominence in NCAA Division III wrestling.

They have both won a record 126 matches and counting as Cobbers, both are All-Americans and while Moenkedick is the defending national champion at 184-pounds, Berns hopes to surpass his national tournament seventh place finish at 149-pounds.

“This year, our whole team might qualify for nationals,” says Moenkedick. “It’s not out of the question. We have the talent here.”

That’s not a boast from one of the soft-spoken, dominating duo. It’s a prediction based on the confidence they have attained as winners on the mat.

“Our senior class has been responsible for elevating the program,” says Berns. “And now the underclassmen look up to us as role models and leaders. For Phil and me, it’s all about our team.” More
