Join us on this 12-day trip that will take you to the landmarks and countryside that influenced Martin Luther. Explore cities like Erfurt, Leipzig and Munich. Stay in the spectacular Alps and tour castles. We also will attend the 41st performance of the Oberammergau Passion Play, a tradition that plays out on stage only once every 10 years. The Rev. Ernie Mancini, retired director of the Concordia College Alumni Office, and his wife, Diane, will serve as trip leaders. Travel arrangements are made through Ed-Ventures in Rochester, Minn.
History of the Oberammergau Passion Play
The Oberammergau Passion Play began in 1633, in the middle of the Thirty Years War. After months of dying and suffering from the plague, the people of Oberammergau vowed to perform the "Play of the Suffering, Dying, and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ" every 10 years. As early as the mid-1700s, spectators flocked to Oberammergau from all parts of Germany. Today the village hosts guests from around the world. The five-hour performance includes more than 2,000 participants. Nearly half of the village's inhabitants perform the story of Jesus of Nazareth on the large open-air stage.
Ernie Mancini
Mancini was campus pastor and counselor at Concordia from 1975 to 1983 and executive director of Alumni Relations from 1986 until his retirement. He and his wife, Diane, live in Moorhead.
The Mancinis have led numerous alumni tours, including ones to the Oberammergau Passion Play. Their warmth, humor and expertise will make this trip memorable.
The Rev. Ernie Mancini retired from Concordia College in 2006 after 28 years of distinguished service to the college and the Moorhead community. His love of connecting with the college's alumni and sharing heartfelt demonstrations of Cobber spirit has not diminished, however.
