Why Study Scandinavian at Concordia?

Concordia’s Department of Norwegian & Scandinavian Studies offers exciting opportunities to learn about the Nordic region from a broad range of perspectives: language, culture, politics, history, and philosophy. The department sets strong emphasis on the role the Nordic countries play in the global affairs of the world today.

Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland have made significant contributions to various fields worth exploring: peacemaking, human rights, the welfare model, theatre, arts and design, the oil and fish industry, engineering of cars, bridges, and tunnels, research of the Arctic region, and environmental projects.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, it is easy to combine major or minor in Norwegian or Scandinavian Studies with other academic fields, for example, global studies, international politics, international business, education, theatre, philosophy, psychology, music, women’s studies or science.

As part of Concordia’s liberal arts education, Norwegian & Scandinavian Studies program helps to develop research, communication and analytical skills necessary to success in all careers and professional occupations. The comparative approach to the courses on the Nordic countries provides not only a gateway to new cultural horizons, but also an insight into the U.S. culture and values.

The department also helps many heritage students to learn more about their historical and cultural background as well as to discover / maintain stronger ties to the family and relatives from the Nordic countries.
