Pre-Engineering Program

Earning a degree in engineering is no small feat, but thanks to the pre-engineering program at Concordia you can get yourself off to an excellent start. Concordia participates in a dual degree program with the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. With this program, you can earn a Bachelor of Arts in applied science from Concordia and then a Bachelor of Science in your specific field of engineering from the University of Minnesota – all in just five years.

The U of M offers a wide variety of engineering disciplines for our students to choose from, including aerospace and mechanics, biomedical, civil, chemical, computer, geological and mechanical engineering. To prepare you for studies in those areas, you can concentrate your studies at Concordia in specific areas of math and science, including chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and computer science. Because you’ll have three years at Concordia to complete your early courses, with careful planning you may have time to explore a few areas in which you are most interested.

The Liberal Arts Advantage

In the dual degree engineering program, you’re not only earning two bachelor’s degrees – you’re gaining a valuable liberal arts education. By spending your first three years of study at Concordia, you’ll build a solid foundation of reading, writing, interpersonal and critical thinking skills, along with global awareness. You can also explore your other interests, such as music or athletics. This background will make you much more competitive and successful in the professional world.

While at Concordia, you will complete all of your Core Curriculum requirements, which will also directly transfer to the U of M to meet their requirements as well. You will also complete the required technical courses at Concordia that you will need to start your particular engineering program at the U of M.

You’ll also have the advantage of taking your important basic math and science courses in small classes from faculty members who care deeply about your success. Small lab sizes and individualized attention will ensure you get the most out of your education and are ready for your future engineering courses. Our chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics departments have just the courses you need.

The U of M also sends an advisor to Concordia annually to talk about the program, offerings and requirements, and answer your questions.
