Special Opportunities in Physics

Small class sizes and focused attention on practical learning inside and outside the classroom makes studying physics at Concordia unique. You’ll gain personal attention from talented faculty who have experience in a variety of specializations such as electromagnetic theory, astronomy, mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, electronics and quantum physics.

You will also have the chance to earn physics honors by meeting certain criteria, including a 3.30 GPA in the major at the time of graduation. Concordia also has a chapter of the Sigma Pi Sigma Honor Society. This is a national honor society for students who demonstrate exceptional talent in physics.

Many students decide to join Concordia’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students, a national organization dedicated to supporting undergraduate and graduate physics education. Our chapter was chartered in 1973 and is still going strong. Or, if representing your fellow students is more your style, our department selects two student representatives each year who serve as liaisons between the students and faculty. And don't forget about the Science Academy, an event hosted by our physics, biology and chemistry departments for local elementary students to build their interest in science.

In addition, Concordia offers a pre-engineering program, a 3-2 dual degree collaboration with the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. To prepare you for studies engineering studies at the U of M, you can concentrate your studies at Concordia in specific areas of math and science, including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer science.

It is these distinctions and more that make Concordia’s physics department an exciting place to study and research.
