Mathematics
Special Opportunities
Our mathematics faculty isn’t just skilled in a variety of specialties in the field, such as differential equations, graph theory, humanistic mathematics, coding theory and topology. Several are recipients of the Ole and Lucy Flaat Distinguished Research Award and inspirational speakers. One is an international coach for the math Olympiad team, another is a member of the Moorhead public school board and yet another teaches a course on introductory Chinese. There are countless amounts of hands-on training in the math program, part of the college's math and computer science department. Students are encouraged to engage in challenging summer research at top universities such as Cornell and Valparaiso University. Our students also take part in math competitions and the Math Club takes trips to various undergraduate conferences in the region.
Our award-winning global education program also offers special chances to study abroad with the math program. The popular “Mathematics in Another Light” seminar allows you to spend the month of May exploring the origins of ancient and modern mathematics in Rome, Paris, Cairo, Athens and Paris. This seminar is one of the longest continuous offerings of Concordia’s acclaimed May Seminar abroad program.
Concordia math students also play an important role in the Tri-College Math Competition, an event held every three years on Concordia’s campus. Our students help conduct the tournament for as many as 1,500 area high school students.
