Music Ensembles and Sports Abroad

Study and travel abroad is ingrained in the culture of Concordia College. The earliest groups to travel abroad were our renowned music groups, and more recently, several of our intercollegiate athletic teams have traveled, trained and competed abroad.

More than 60 years ago, the college capitalized on its many connections offered by our Scandinavian heritage by sending our music groups abroad. The Concordia Band and The Concordia Choir presented concerts that included performances for royalty, which resulted in earning international acclaim. Recent tours by the band, choir and orchestra have included concert appearances in Ireland, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Hungary and Japan. The Concordia Choir was featured on a BBC broadcast from London, further enhancing its status as an internationally renowned ensemble.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams have trained with and competed against some of the world’s top teams during recent trips in the U.S. and abroad. The men’s team has competed in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis and Barcelona, Spain. The women’s team has played exhibitions with the most recent winner of the Brazilian Cup in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paul, Brazil. The team will next travel to Cambodia and Thailand where they will play the Thai national team in Bangkok.

While abroad for competitions or concerts, members of our sports and music ensembles tour significant sites and participate in other activities to gain a deeper cultural appreciation and understanding that their travel opportunities affords.
