Lutheran College Semester - Program
As you attend the LCWS, you’ll receive a full semester of academic credit from Concordia. You’ll earn your course credit from two academic courses and an internship, worth two credits. The
internship offers the beneficial chance to work right beside professionals in an area of your interest, such as art history, public relations, business, international relations, law, computer science, psychology, religion and women’s studies.
Through LCWS, you will take daily classes with one day a week reserved for tours and other activities, as well as an internship at one of many businesses and organizations in D.C. While participating in the program, you’ll reside in a furnished two-bedroom condo right across from the Potomac River with easy access to public transportation. Your home for the semester is within walking distance of some of D.C.’s most interesting sites, including Georgetown and the Iwo Jima Memorial. There will also be plenty of time for sightseeing on your own, easy access to the metro and opportunities for weekend getaways to nearby Baltimore, Philadelphia or New York.
Classes are taught in the evenings. The curriculum covers a variety of topics relevant to today’s society such as global agenda, American diversity, political communication, art and architecture, business, and conflict and compromise.
The internship, during the day, is an opportunity to work in areas such as Congress, a government office, a lobbying firm, in broadcasting or journalism, or at a non-profit organization, such as an environmental group or human rights organization. Other areas are also a possibility.
Grades and evaluation are based on: attendance, academic coursework, an analysis and summary of a House or Senate hearing, participation and reflection on a live protest or demonstration and 12 hours of community service.
