Frequent Questions from Potential Participants

1. When can I study abroad?
The simple answer: right now! There are Exploration and May Seminars available for every Concordia student. Most students study abroad as upperclassmen, but many programs allow you to study abroad whenever it works in your schedule. Just make sure the classes you wish to take are also offered. Be sure to look into what kinds of financial aid may be available to help you afford your trip.

2. What can I study abroad?
There are programs available for every discipline. Exploration and May Seminars are offered each year in a variety of different subjects, and most semester and yearlong programs can accommodate almost any discipline. There are a few programs that emphasize more specific areas, allowing you to pursue certain interests.

3. Where do I get an application?
You can get an application by contacting:

4. When are the deadlines?
Deadlines vary from program to program. The deadlines for 2008 semester programs will be announced through out the academic year. Please refer to the Global Education Web site frequently or contact the office at inted@cord.edu or 218.299.3927.

5. Where will I live during my semester/year abroad?
The options vary according to the programs. Many times there are pre-arranged living quarters in an apartment or flat with an American, Concordia student or a student from your country of study. Home stays and living in university residence halls can sometimes be available. Students on Exploration Seminars and May Seminars usually stay in hotels, with possible homestays.

6. Can I take my financial aid with me abroad?
Financing for the semester and year abroad programs depends on which program you choose. You will need to work with the Office of Global Education and the Financial Aid Office to determine program costs and the possibilities of financial aid.

7. Will the credits transfer from a university that is abroad?
Yes, if you follow these steps to prepare before you leave. When you apply, you’ll meet with your adviser to ensure that your credits from a foreign university will transfer. Your adviser will help you decide which classes to take abroad. If you want to apply a course taken abroad towards your major or minor requirements, you must have written approval from your department chair before leaving.

8. Are there language requirements for studying abroad?
This depends on the program you choose. In most Concordia programs, you won’t need to be proficient in a second language to study abroad. However, there are programs that are geared more specifically toward language development, as immersion in a new culture is an excellent way to improve proficiency.
