Teach Grant Information

Concordia College participates in the TEACH Grant program. Please read through the following information carefully to determine if you are eligible to apply for this grant.

In order to be eligible for the TEACH Grant at Concordia, you must have already taken or be enrolled in Education 210 – Foundations in K-12 Education. This class is generally taken during the sophomore year. During the class, students apply for and are accepted into the Teacher Education Program.

The following are the TEACH Grant requirements:
  1. Must teach in a high need field such as foreign languages, science or math, and
  2. Must teach in a low income school district (Title 1 - see a current listing.) and
  3. Must teach for four years within eight years of graduation from the teacher education program, and
  4. Must meet GPA or ACT/SAT requirements.
  5. It is unlikely that elementary education majors will be eligible for the TEACH Grant as the student must spend more than 51 percent of his or her time teaching in a high need field. There are two exceptions:
    1. Elementary education majors planning on teaching bilingual classrooms, or
    2. Elementary education majors with science or math specialties may apply if they teach in a middle school setting and the majority of their day is spent teaching math or science.
If you receive a TEACH Grant and you do not fulfill these requirements, the Grant will convert to a Federal Unsubsidized Loan at 6.8 percent interest as of the day the Grant was disbursed.

If you are still interested in applying for the TEACH Grant, you must follow these steps (in order):
(Please print these instructions for future reference.)
  1.   Go on-line to: https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/index.action
    1. Click on "What to Expect" and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) This will give you the information needed if you want to pursue the TEACH grant.
    2. To complete the process: mail a copy of your ACT or SAT test results to Susan Bornsen in the Education Department at 901 South 8th Street, Moorhead, MN 56562, or bring it to the Education office in Old Main 109.
    3. You will need your Federal Student Aid PIN to login to the TEACH website. For additional information on PIN, access the Federal Student Aid PIN Web site.
    4. Go on-line to:https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/index.action
    5. Click on "My TEACH Grant"
    6. Complete the Initial and Subsequent Counseling. You will need about 30 minutes to complete the counseling session.
    7. Then complete the Agreement to Serve (ATS). This is a promissory note in which you promise to repay the TEACH Grant if you do not fulfill the TEACH Grant requirements.

(Both of these sessions need to be completed each year you apply for a TEACH Grant)

Send yourself an email recording the dates you completed these sessions, as you will be asked for these dates when you meet for Continued Counseling.

After doing all of the above, call Susan Bornsen at 218-299-3911 or email sbornsen@cord.edu and set up an appointment to meet with her. Her office hours are 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. You will need to meet with Susan each semester.

Once the Financial Aid Office has received confirmation that you have completed the ATS, we will award the TEACH Grant to you. Remember that your financial aid cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance ($32,035 for 2009-2010) so if the TEACH Grant puts you over that limit the Financial Aid Office may need to reduce your loans.

If you have any questions after reading all of the above, please go to the U.S. Department of Education website. Currently, this is the best and most up-to-date information available about the new TEACH Grant.
