Professional Development Support for Research and Scholarly Activities


The Centennial Classroom Research Program: 

This program has two goals: to strengthen faculty inquiry and teaching by direct involvement in research in classroom teaching, and to strengthen student learning both through participation in the research and through establishing the best teaching and learning patterns in the classroom.  Research projects involving curricular issues may also be included in the Classroom Research Program.  Application deadline: October 23, 2007.


The Centennial Individual Research Scholars Program:

This program supports research activity conducted individually by faculty members in their own academic disciplines.  Projects that use the methodologies or skills appropriate to a specific discipline, exploring current problems in social issues, questions of values, issues of institutional significance, and/or questions of importance in that discipline can be funded by this program.  Application deadline: October 23, 2007.


The Centennial Scholars Program: 

This program is designed to accentuate the role of faculty and students as co-inquirers through the support of research activity.  This program supports inquiry in projects using the methodologies or skills appropriate to a specific discipline, exploring current problems in social issues, questions of values, issues of institutional significance, and/or questions of importance in that discipline.  Application deadline: October 23, 2007.


Dean's Travel Account: 

Limited funds are available in the Dean's Travel Account to assist faculty who make presentations at professional meetings.  Funds may be used for transportation expenses within the United States and up to $1,000 for travel abroad.

Funds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and faculty may use this account only once each academic year.  The dean's approval must be requested before travel purchases.  Request forms are available on the Academic Affairs website at www.cord.edu/Academics/Dean/Facultyresources/forms.php.


Degree Completion Grants: 

Faculty may receive financial assistance toward the expenses of finishing a terminal degree.  Application deadline: March 10, 2008.


Faculty Colloquium Series:

This series provides a forum for presentation of faculty members' work; presenters receive a $150 stipend.  Contact Laura Hoverson (x3257) to schedule a presentation.


Sabbatical Leave Program: 

Faculty who have been full time with the college for seven years are eligible to receive one semester leave at 90 percent salary or a full-year leave at 60 percent salary, for professional renewal and growth.  Refer to the Faculty Handbook for complete eligibility requirements.  Application deadline: October 23, 2007.


Summer Study Grants: 

Faculty receive financial support for summer activities such as summer institutes, short courses, research projects, etc.  The Summer Study Grant Program also includes the Robert M. and Patricia Hendrickson Endowment Fund for Faculty Development, which is available to faculty who teach in the areas of music, art and theatre art.  Application deadline: March 10, 2008.


Support in Securing Research Grants: 

Jillain Veil-Ehnert, the director of Foundation Relations in the Development Office (x3733), is prepared to assist faculty members in identifying and applying for research grants.  All grant requests need to be approved by the dean of the college.  Please see the Academic Affairs website for a copy of the grant approval form at www.cord.edu/Academics/Dean/Facultyresources/forms.php.
