Post-Doc Haiyan Fan Hired
This fall the chemistry department welcomes Dr. Haiyan Fan, who joins us for two years as an instructor and post-doctoral associate. Dr. Fan will perform research with Dr. Darin Ulness in the Concordia College Laser Facility. She will also teach both general chemistry and physical chemistry during her time with us. Dr. Fan received her Ph.D. in chemistry from Marquette University and has most recently been a post-doctoral researcher at Argonne National Laboratory.  Accompanying Dr. Fan to Fargo-Moorhead are her husband, David, and their son, Andrew.

New Laser Spectroscopy Scientist Hired

Dr. Eric Peterson recently joined Concordia’s chemistry faculty, bringing with him a background in laser spectroscopy. Peterson, a biophysical chemist who will teach courses in both physical chemistry and biochemistry, is currently researching the dynamics of protein folding. He will join Dr. Darin Ulness as co-director of the Concordia College Laser Facility. Peterson has his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and has most recently worked as a faculty member at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

Third Annual Summer Chemistry Research Program A Success
Modeled after the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates, Concordia’s summer chemistry research program offers students an opportunity for an extended and intensive research experience working directly with faculty. Last year alone, seven Concordia students and three high school students participated in summer research, working closely with Dr. “Chopper” Krogstad, Dr. Darin Ulness, Dr. David Mork and Dr. Mark Jensen. With an emphasis on both individual research and building scholarly community, students enjoyed several get-togethers and a research symposium at the end of the summer.
