Major in Business

The major in business offers nine concentrations: organizational leadership, marketing, finance, economics, healthcare administration, healthcare leadership, healthcare financial management, long-term care administration and management information systems. Students must take supporting and foundation classes prior to enrolling in upper-division courses (300 and 400 level). Permission may be granted by the instructor for students to concurrently take one foundation or supporting class with upper-division courses. It is recommended that students take the MATH class prior to economics and accounting courses. The economics and finance concentrations require MATH 121.

Concordia has a long tradition of offering programs specifically focused on the healthcare industry. The healthcare management program provides a specialized base of knowledge for managing a variety of healthcare facilities including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. The program consists of a combination of classroom study, as well as an internship experience in a healthcare facility during the student’s final two years of college, normally during the summer months. Students who desire exposure to the healthcare management program without the internship experience should complete the healthcare administration concentration. Students seeking to move directly into management positions in the healthcare field are strongly encouraged to complete one of the three certificate programs, which requires the completion of a 12-week (480-hour) internship. Students must have an application approved by the program directors in order to complete an internship, and student must maintain at least an overall GPA of 2.75 in order to undertake the internship. Students cannot combine the healthcare administration concentration with any certificate program.

Management Information Systems Concentration (an interdisciplinary program) requires 20 credits:
The Offutt School of Business and the department of mathematics cooperate to offer the management information systems (MIS) concentration. The goal is to prepare students to understand hardware, programming language, software and their applications to business. This concentration has been developed in response to industry needs for people who understand both computers and business. In addition to technical skills, employers seek people who have good business and interpersonal skills. The strength of the concentration is its combination of the liberal arts, technology skills, and a thorough grounding in the principles of the functional areas of business. Students should consult an advisor in the Offutt School of Business for information on recommended plans of study for this concentration.

The capstone to this program is a 4-credit Cooperative Education experience that emphasizes the integration of technology and business skills. The student obtains an internship/co-op assignment that provides work experience in both business (BUS 390) and technology (CSC 390) with two faculty coordinators – one who teaches computer science courses and the other who teaches business-related courses within the MIS program.
Marketing Concentration requires 15 credits:
