“Genes Involved in Organelle Biogenesis in Trypanosomes”

My research focuses on identification and characterization of genes from kinetoplastid organisms (e.g. Trypanosoma and Leishmania spp.) that are involved in organelle biogenesis.  My lab currently identifies candidate genes in the genome of Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), and asks basic scientific questions about expression and localization of the proteins encoded by these genes.  We are particularly interested in genes involved in biogenesis of lipid droplets as well as the glycosome organelle.  The research has future potential applications in the area of drug target design.
