"Genetic Analysis of organelle biosynthesis in Trypanosoma brucei"

Dr. John Flaspohler

My research focuses on genetic analysis of organelle biogenesis the in pathogenic protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei, the causative pathogen for African Sleeping Sickness. Using primarily molecular biological approaches and techniques, we will attempt to identify, isolate and characterize genes and gene products critical to the parasite's ability to synthesize lipid droplet organelles.  These ubiquitous organelles have been demonstrated to be required for optimal pathogen survival.  The long-term goal of this research is the identification of specific chemotherapeutic targets critical for pathogen survival that might be exploited in development of therapies.  The proposed research will allow students to gain experience in molecular, genetic, cellular, and possibly immunological aspects of molecular biological research.
