Additional Steps

The Building Working Group has already provided a solar-powered device for students to use to charge cell phones, an herb garden, an exchange of incandescent light bulbs for Compact Fluorescent light bulbs, and installed electricity meters in four dorms across campus.

Currently, the Building Working Group is working to make residence halls more sustainable by:
  • Installing high-efficiency washers in dorms
  • Developing a model-house with a minimum environmental footprint for student residence
  • Installing water-saving fixtures in Bogstad apartments and dorms
  • Replacing old windows with more efficient windows in Fjelstad Hall and Brown Hall
The working group is also promoting solar energy in the Campus Center and installing software to reduce the waste of paper across campus. In order to continue making progress, the Working Group hopes to educate students about energy efficiency and waste mitigation, in part by implementing apprenticeship and collaborative programs.

The Building Working Group’s goals for the future include:
  • A model dorm room
  • A renewably powered carpool vehicle
  • A renewably powered coffee shop
  • Green roofs
  • Geothermally heated greenhouses to grow vegetables and fruits for Dining Services
